The Flint Hills Trail and Prairie Spirit Trail offers more than 150 miles of Rail Trail that was made for Social Distancing!
During the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone is thinking about new ways to get outside and exercise. On a nice day, trails near the cities are packed with walkers, joggers, and bikers. While it’s great to see so many people getting outside, it can be difficult to enjoy a quiet time away from others. Not to mention it can be a challenge to maintain a safe 6-foot distance from others in these crowded areas.
Fortunately, Kansas has an incredible resource in the Flint Hills Trail and Prairie Spirit Trail State Parks which together offer more than 150 miles of the beautiful rail trail. These trails were made for social distancing! Whether you are a walker, jogger, cyclist, or equestrian, you can enjoy your time on the trail. The trails are wide with plenty of room to pass if you do encounter others on the trails.
“Kansas state parks, fishing lakes and wildlife areas are currently open to the public. Help us keep these areas open by practicing social distancing and avoiding gathering in groups”.
We have seen an increase in interest in the trails in recent weeks. As the weather gets warmer, more and more people will make the trails their destination for a few hours, a full day, or even multi-day adventures. Even with increased usage, the trials offer miles and miles of social distancing heaven. Just get a mile or so away from any city or town on the Prairie Spirit or Flint Hills Trails and you are likely to have the trail to yourself. On a recent bicycle ride from Osawatomie to Rantoul, a round trip distance of about 20 miles, we encountered only two other groups on the trail. Check out the resources and maps below to help you find a convenient place to get on the trial.
Ottawa Bike and Trail is located at the intersection of the Prairie Spirit and Flint Hills Trails. We are a full service bicycle shop, but we also provide information and services to support trail users. We offer bicycle rentals and we love working with families to get everyone out on a bike. During normal times we provide trail transportation and shuttle services as well and conduct rides and events on the trails. Unfortunately, we have had to put these services on hold for the time being. However, we want to continue to provide information and support to help you experience the trails.
If you are interested in exploring the Flint Hills Trail, we have developed a comprehensive guide of the resources available along the trail. You can click the links below to view our information page for each trail. If you still have questions you can always contact us as we are happy to provide additional information and resources to help you plan your outing on the trails.
